How to Open a Bank Account in Belize in 2026

Foreign individuals and overseas companies can apply for bank accounts in Belize, but the appropriate institution depends on residence, account currency, business activity and intended use. Non-residents seeking an account in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD or another foreign currency will usually need to approach one of the international banks licensed by the Central Bank of Belize.

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Belize?

Yes. A non-resident individual or foreign company can apply for a bank account in Belize. However, opening an account is neither anonymous nor automatic. Every bank applies its own KYC, AML and risk-acceptance rules and may request additional documents, conduct an interview or decline the application.

Before selecting a bank, determine whether the applicant is a Belize resident or non-resident, whether a personal or corporate account is required, which currencies will be used, where the money originates and which countries will be involved in future payments.

Practical answer: a foreign individual or overseas company needing an account in a foreign currency will generally consider an international bank. A Belize-dollar account for a non-resident is governed by separate exchange-control procedures.

Domestic banks and international banks

Belize has domestic banks serving the local economy and a separate international banking sector licensed to provide foreign-currency services to non-residents. Confusing these two systems is one of the most common mistakes made by applicants.

Factor Domestic banks International banks
Typical customers Belize residents and local businesses Non-residents and foreign companies
Primary currency Belize dollars, with regulated foreign-currency facilities Foreign currencies
Principal legislation Domestic banking and financial-institution legislation International Banking Act
Typical purpose Local payroll, expenses, credit and domestic transactions International transfers, savings and cross-border business
Exchange control Applies to relevant transactions and accounts Depends on the product and client status
Deposit protection Domestic-bank protection must be assessed under the applicable scheme Do not assume the same protection automatically applies

International banks currently licensed in Belize

The Central Bank of Belize currently lists three international banks holding an A Class — Unrestricted licence:

  • Belize Bank International Limited;
  • Caye International Bank Ltd.;
  • Heritage International Bank & Trust Limited.

The official list presently shows no international banks holding a B Class — Restricted licence. Always verify an institution directly through the Central Bank rather than relying on its name, advertising or website appearance.

How to choose a Belize bank

There is no universally best bank. The correct choice depends on citizenship, country of residence, tax residence, occupation or business sector, expected turnover, transaction countries, required currencies and the source of funds.

Before submitting an application, obtain clear answers on:

  • whether the bank accepts applicants from the relevant country;
  • whether it accepts the applicant’s business activity;
  • available personal and corporate account products;
  • supported currencies;
  • initial deposit and minimum-balance requirements;
  • incoming and outgoing transfer charges;
  • correspondent-bank fees;
  • online banking and card availability;
  • whether the process can begin remotely;
  • whether originals, certification, apostille or a visit may be required.

Documents for a personal account

Requirements vary by institution, but a non-resident individual will commonly be asked for:

  • a completed and signed bank application;
  • a clear colour copy of a valid passport;
  • a second identification document when required;
  • recent proof of residential address;
  • tax-identification and tax-residence information;
  • a bank or professional reference where required;
  • a résumé or description of professional activity;
  • evidence of source of funds;
  • evidence of source of wealth;
  • an explanation of the account purpose;
  • expected balance, monthly turnover and transaction countries.

Source of funds and source of wealth

Source of funds explains the origin of a specific amount entering the account—for example salary, business revenue, dividends, inheritance or the sale of an asset. Source of wealth explains how the applicant accumulated overall wealth through employment, business, investment or other lawful activity.

General statements such as “personal savings” may not be enough. Bank statements, contracts, tax returns, financial statements, payslips or sale documents can establish a credible documentary chain.

Documents for a corporate account

A bank reviews the company as well as its directors, shareholders, authorised signatories and ultimate beneficial owners. A typical corporate package may include:

  • certificate of incorporation;
  • memorandum and articles or equivalent constitutional documents;
  • current registers of directors and shareholders;
  • share certificates where applicable;
  • certificate of good standing or incumbency where required;
  • a board resolution approving the account and signatories;
  • an ownership chart reaching all ultimate beneficial owners;
  • personal KYC documents for all key participants;
  • a detailed business description and business model;
  • company website and business email address;
  • contracts, invoices or evidence of genuine activity;
  • financial statements or financial projections;
  • counterparty, country, currency and transaction information;
  • evidence supporting the initial deposit.

A newly incorporated company is not automatically disqualified, but it must explain who its customers will be, what it will sell, where revenue will originate and how the account will be used.

Opening procedure

Define the account purpose

State whether the account is for savings, income, property ownership, investment, international trading or company operating expenses.

Select the appropriate banking sector

A non-resident requiring foreign currencies will usually consider an international bank. A local BZD account may follow a different exchange-control route.

Conduct a preliminary eligibility review

Confirm that the bank accepts the applicant’s country, residence, industry, ownership structure and transaction profile before completing lengthy forms.

Prepare one consistent banking file

Names, addresses, ownership, turnover, account purpose and source of money should agree across forms, contracts, bank statements, company records and public information.

Submit the application and complete compliance review

The bank may perform database screening, request additional evidence, arrange a video call or interview and ask questions about ownership and transactions.

Receive approval and fund the account

Transfer the initial deposit only after receiving verified instructions from an authorised bank employee.

Can the account be opened remotely?

Some banks allow an application and preliminary review to begin remotely. Remote processing does not necessarily mean that no further action will be required. The bank may request a video interview, certified originals, courier delivery, updated proof of address, an additional reference or a personal visit.

The accurate statement is that remote opening may be available depending on the bank and applicant profile; it is not guaranteed for every client.

Timelines and costs

A straightforward, well-documented application may take several weeks. A complex ownership structure, regulated activity, elevated country risk or repeated document requests may extend the process to several months.

Potential costs include:

  • bank application or opening fees where applicable;
  • the initial deposit and required minimum balance;
  • notarisation, certification and apostille;
  • professional translation of documents;
  • courier delivery of originals;
  • professional preparation and coordination;
  • online-banking, card and transaction charges.

An initial deposit normally remains the client’s money in the account and should not be confused with a non-refundable application charge or a professional service fee. Obtain an up-to-date tariff from the selected bank before proceeding.

Why banks reject applications

  • the origin of money cannot be documented;
  • application information conflicts with supporting records;
  • the ownership structure is unnecessarily complex or unclear;
  • expected transactions do not match the client profile;
  • the bank does not accept the country, industry or activity;
  • not all beneficial owners have been disclosed;
  • the company cannot demonstrate genuine economic activity;
  • documents are expired, improperly certified or poorly translated;
  • sanctions or serious reputational concerns are identified;
  • the applicant fails to answer compliance questions.

Are Belize bank accounts anonymous?

No. A modern Belize bank account is not anonymous. Banks identify clients and beneficial owners, understand the purpose of the relationship, verify source of funds and monitor unusual activity.

Belize participates in the Common Reporting Standard framework for the automatic exchange of financial-account information. Confidentiality protects information from improper public disclosure; it does not conceal the account holder from the bank, regulator, tax authority or a lawful official request.

Exchange control and Belize-dollar accounts

The Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2 to US$1. Exchange-control rules apply to relevant foreign-currency transactions and relationships between residents and non-residents.

The Central Bank states that domestic banks are not permitted to open foreign-currency accounts for non-residents and encourages those clients to bank with institutions licensed under the International Banking Act.

A non-resident Belize-dollar account follows a separate process. Certain categories are handled under authority delegated to domestic banks. Requests outside those categories must be referred to the Central Bank and ordinarily identify the applicant, address, account purpose, source of funds and account type, supported by certified identification and source-of-funds evidence.

Does the applicant need a Belize company?

A Belize company is not required for a personal account. A corporate account may potentially be opened for a Belize or foreign company when the bank accepts its jurisdiction and business profile.

Incorporating a company does not guarantee banking approval. The bank will still review ownership, activity, counterparties, source of funds and the commercial reason for the structure.

How to improve the likelihood of approval

  • choose a bank according to the client profile rather than advertising;
  • provide a clear explanation of the account purpose;
  • present income, business and transactions as one consistent story;
  • document source of funds with evidence;
  • disclose every ultimate beneficial owner;
  • use valid documents and professional translations;
  • provide realistic turnover estimates;
  • disclose regulated or higher-risk activity in advance;
  • answer compliance questions promptly and completely;
  • after opening, conduct only activity consistent with the declared profile.
